I felt that a painting of the Christian story of
the Annunciation needed to be part of the exploration of why girls
want to get married, but I was unconvinced on how to handle the
story. While leafing through the many examples of how other artists
dealt with the subject, I came across Botticellis version.
I was surprised when I looked at his figure of the Angel Gabriel
to realize the artists was not treating the figure as the messenger,
but as the seducer. So I borrowed his angel for my painting.
My Virgin is from a photo session I had with the 7
year-old daughter of friends. I asked her to dress her Barbie doll
as the Virgin Mary. This is what she assembled for my camera.
Leda and the Swan had to follow.
