The story of the exorcism of Friedaburga

Saint Gall and his two companions, Martin The Bear and the nameless disciple walked on up the mountain trails, encountering few Pagans, until they came upon a beautiful young girl named Friedaburga with her entourage. She appeared to be in great distress. Her father begged the young priest to help.

He explained that his daughter had been betrothed to Sigebert II at birth and that now the 13-year-old prince was about to be crowned King, the marriage was essential to ensure the succession of power.

Unfortunately, during their trip Friedaburga had been possessed by a demon and was refusing to go further.

The nameless young disciple took off in a hurry, but Gall and Martin performed the exorcism. A cheer went up when the demon left the child in the form of a black bird flying from her mouth.

Sigebert II was so grateful he gave Gall some land near Lake Constance where he built his hermitage.

More misfortune saw the young King killed by his grandmother, Brunhilde. before the wedding took place.

My choice of figure for the 12 year old Friedaburga is obviously, Alice. The priest and the landscape behind her is borrowed from a Giotto mural. Martin the Bear is my own invention.
